EFRY OFFERS FREE SERVICES WHICH SUPPORT WOMEN, MEN, AND ALL GENDER-DIVERSE COMMUNITY MEMBERS AGES 18+

We advocate for community alternatives to criminal justice sanctions. Our workers work directly with people who are accused to navigate the criminal justice system and to access resources in the community to address the underlying issues which may have contributed or resulted in criminalization. We also actively support individuals who have been given community sentences. Some examples include providing programming to clients who have probation orders with programming requirements, and offering community hours to support clients who have a community service order.

We also participate in Community Support Court, which is a specialized criminal court designed to assist individuals with mental health and/or substance use issues and/or intellectual impairment. CSC is an opportunity for individuals who are struggling to enter a specialized court stream which takes into account the struggles that the individual is facing and assists by supporting them in developing a treatment plan which will assist in addressing the underlining reasons for them entering the criminal justice system. The treatment plan will be specific to the individual needs

We provide the verification of information at bail court and the supervision of accused persons as an alternative to custody while awaiting a court disposition and/or trial. Our organization has a strong history of helping people through the provision of prevention and intervention services, as well as advocacy and public education. We strive to offer programs that are evidence-based and responsive to our community needs thereby contributing to the health & safety of our community.

THE BAIL PROGRAM IS AVAILABLE TO MALE, FEMALE, AND GENDER-DIVERSE PERSONS 16 YEARS OF AGE AND OLDER ACCUSED OF A CRIMINAL OFFENCE WHO ARE:

  • Awaiting initial bail proceedings
  • Remanded for show cause hearings
  • In custody unable to meet their surety or cash bail
  • Appealing a bail decision which has resulted in detention

Our program prevents individuals from remaining in custody while their court matter progresses through the legal system.  Many of these individuals are unable to secure bail or surety on their own due to a lack of social supports, or assets to put forward to secure their release.

Our programs aide in the decriminalization of poverty, mental health, and addiction while ensuring individuals have community support during and after their court proceedings.

Indigenous People Court – E Naaknind Anishinaabeg (IPCENA) provides alternatives to the punitive approach in the Justice system, which addresses accountability in a constructive and restorative way in the spirit of the Gladue decision (1999), the Ipeelee decision (2012), and the recommendations of the Truth and Reconciliation Committee (2015).

The Indigenous Peoples Court will address the resolution plan in a manner that is proportional to the responsibility of the accused.

This comes at the agreement of the accused to accept responsibility for their actions and an agreement of facts is drawn up between the crown and the defence.

Resolutions are to be completed to the satisfaction of the court, the victim, and the accused. The accused is expected to engage meaningfully in their rehabilitation.
